BUYING PROPERTY IN MEGEVE, FRANCE Megeve is the grande dame of the Alps and is viewed by many as one of Europe’s most charming ski resorts. Founded by the Rothschild family in the early 20th Century to rival St. Moritz, Megeve’s traditional alpine appearance disguises a ritzy-glitz heart. The resort is part of the extensive Espace Diamant ski area where the skiing is a mix of tree-lined trails and sunny open slopes set before the dramatic backdrop of Mont Blanc. The few off-piste skiers revel in the often untracked powder snow. Mountain lunches are an art form in Megeve – try L’Alpette in the Rochebrune sector, the Auberge du Christomet in Jaillet or the Ideal by Mont Arbois. Village life centres around the medieval church, with excellent shopping for designer clothes, jewellery and antiques in the narrow streets. For evening dining, the choice is the best in the Alps: for Michelin stars head to Le Ferme de Mon Pere or Les Flocons de Sel. Before or after dinner head to the Club de Jazz Les Cinq Rues, the Ronnie Scott’s of the Alps, with live music from late afternoon. Megeve Properties Megeve is characterised by its attractive low chalets, the vision of early 20th Century architect Henry-Jacques Le Meme and now typical to this part of the Haute Savoie.
Wood and stone has been widely used in the property development on both sides of the long, gentle valley, meaning chalets benefit from extensive views and the luxury of space.
The high property prices reflect Megeve’s status as one of France’s most exclusive and expensive winter destinations. Chalet properties towards Mont Arbois attract the highest premiums for their proximity to the ski pistes and panoramic views. Over 200 existing chalets incorporate the fresh interior designs, such as mosaic floors, of Emile Jacques Ruhlmann.
With excellent road links to Geneva, Megeve also appeals to buyers looking to be within a short commute of the Swiss business centre and an international airport.
Developments are springing up in Praz sur Arly, a few kilometres down the valley. The small village shares many of the same attributes as its chic neighbour – sunny tree-lined ski slopes and Mont Blanc views - though resort life here is more low-key.
